One of the biggest worries of people wanting to travel is leaving their house. It’s probably everyone’s biggest fear to find out that their house got involved in a fire or got broken in while you are away. For your peace of mind, you got to do all necessary steps to secure your home against both natural and man-made trouble. Here is our first set of tips you can use to keep your home safe during travel.
1. Consider getting a home security system
Having a home security system installed in your home will be very beneficial, whether you are inside your home or not. These systems are capable of doing many things, from monitoring activity in and around the house via security cameras to sending off emergency signals when there is an emergency such as a fire. Most of the latest security systems can be managed using your mobile device, which is extremely helpful when you’re away from home.
2. Pick up a home automation system
A home automation system, also called as a smarthome, can be very helpful when you are out of the house. These systems, which sometimes comes integrated with home security systems, perform a wide range of things. They include (but not limited to) adjusting thermostats, turning on/off lights, monitoring security cameras, and many others. These systems can be managed using a mobile device, so such systems are highly convenient regardless of where you are going or how long you are away.
3. Do not indicate that you are away from home
Thieves love houses that are not occupied for one reason or another. If they find out that a house is unattended, it is their cue to attack. There are many ways for burglars to know you’re away. As such, it would be smart to not make indications that you are going to be out. Avoid making public proclamations of travel, especially online, where non-friends can actually spot you. If you’re leaving your house unattended, only tell people you can trust.
4. Don’t store spare keys outside your house
This may seem like common sense, but a lot of people actually don’t follow this tip. There are still a lot of people who leave their house keys at specific areas outside their house. The logic is that they’ll pick up the keys to open the house once they return. The huge problem with that approach is in the event that someone unauthorized gets access to your keys, your home becomes vulnerable to an attack. As such, never in any case leave keys to your house outside. Instead, bring them with you or leave it to someone you trust.
